Analysing Hawaii-Five-O

1. The features of Hawaii-Five-O that suggest it is a TV crime drama are the lighting, music, sound effects, character types and settings.

2. The sub genres of the programme could be adventure, mystery and action.

3. Hawaii Five o is split into three different sections. At the beginning Jin is kidnapped and taken to prison, he meets people and starts talking to them. After a while the fire alarm goes off and everyone is looking for Jin, his name is said through the intercom and he is described by the police so other prisoners can try and spot him and work out who he is.  This suggests that is was a mysterious case as it is structured to encourage the audience to watch the program. At the beginning it is really quiet and calm with not much going on, it is at an equilibrium. In the middle of the episode there is a lot of disruption as they are trying there best to find Jin and the kidnapper, they tackle him to the ground in order to get out of him where Paul is but he doesn't say anything. They threaten him and find his phone. At the beginning of the episode Jin is kidnapped and was panicking of what was going on around him. Later on in the episode they shoot people to try and find him and know of his location. They eventually find him and take him to the hospital. This also links to Roland Barthes Action Codes as there was a lot of action happening in the episode for example body action, the way Jin's friend was using body language attracted the audience as they would want to continue watching the episodes to see why she was acting like that. There were a variety of enigma codes such as mysteries for example investigating the kidnapper. This allowed the audience to continue guessing what was going on further.

Adverts 2

This is an example of an advert that uses open text as is could be open to interpretation. However, the caption anchors the meaning into place. It is almost saying why have other brands of chocolate that aren't as tasty when you can buy Galaxy which is around the same price with much higher quality and taste. It brings you into a different world of happiness.

Intertextuality is used is Shrek. For example in the opening Honeymoon scene , Fiona wipes the mud off Shrek while he hangs upside down just like Mary-Jane kisses Spiderman.  In the film there is a lot of Intertextuality and references to characters from different Disney films. This Intertextuality makes the film more familiar to the audience especially the young children who would know these characters and these characters are used to intertwine with the story lines. Sleeping Beauty may not look like the Disney original but in Shrek she is always portrayed as tired, Rapunzel has the long hair, Snow White is accompanied with her seven dwarves, Cinderella wears glass shoes and the Ugly Sister is ugly. These intertextual references repeat in all the Shrek films to familiarize the characters with the audience.

Media Types

1) Snapchat

In my opinion I think the target audience for Snapchat is anywhere in the range from 10-50. Current demographics show that nearly 80% of its users are between the ages 18-24, it is used widely by both males and females of all races, ethnicities, and social backgrounds and is an easy way to interact with the rest of the world which is why it is so popular with the younger generation. It appeals to young people because it is a fun way to text and interact with your friends and also instantly upload what you're doing by the minute and also view where other people are.

The target audience for Facebook is mainly people 30+, this has been proven in a recent survey which shows 65% of Facebook users are 35 or over of which 5.6 million women and 5.6 million men were using Facebook in January 2018. Facebook has always been diverse and that the diversity has increased significantly over the past year to the point where U.S. Facebook users nearly mirror the diversity of the overall population of the country. This is why many people currently do and will continue using Facebook to interact instead of other forms of Social Media. Facebook appeals to a large age range of people as it offers a positive image of someone or the type of person they want to be.

3) WhatsApp

WhatsApp Messenger is a free application downloaded by several smartphone and tablet users.  The target audience for WhatsApp is between 15-50+ this is because the app allows the sending and receiving of text messages, voice & video calls, images, documents and user location which is what makes it successful as many people of a large age range use the application for their own personal use. Newspaper

1. The three news items I have picked are about Prince Charles, Joe Hart and interest of petrol because these are the three most popular and have a working class background.
2.I chose Prince Charles as he is someone that is from high class and is well known by the target audience. He is presented as being an important person in the media as he is well known and popular in todays society.  This has news value as most people have interest in knowing about the Royal family and what they are doing. The target audience would be male and females which are educated about the royal family and how high of a population they have.
I also chose Joe hart as he is a popular footballer and is a a maximum age which means he may be at the stage of retiring. The target audience would be male which are particularly interested in football and are supporters. For example, a football fan would be watching Joe Hart as he is known well by them. Whereas a none football supporter wouldn't really read something about him if they don't know him well enough. A sense of 'Proximity' as the closer the event is coming the more likely people are wanting to know.
I also chose the interest of petrol as this impacts multiple people because they will be planning to get a house soon and will have to pay the interest. This is a sense of negativity as it would cost individuals more than they thought when putting petrol in their car. This has higher news value as people need to know about the interest as it is a common thing for people who use cars daily. This is a high target audience of male and women which are highly educated and it has a sense of proximity in the news. A sense of 'negativity' as bad news always has a higher news value than good news.

Magazine Front Cover

Bella Hadid is represented as a confident, beautiful woman who knows what she wants. Things that challenge the stereotypes in this cover could be the way in which she's dressed. It looks like she's wearing a top which doesn't show her cleavage, usually most magazine covers show this to attract male gaze, also, her hair is slicked back which also goes against  stereotypes as you usually associate males with slicked back black hair.
Things that reinforce stereotypes are how thin the model is, you can see her arms are really thin which reinforces the stereotype that women look pretty when they are thin. Her makeup is really natural which shows she is naturally beautiful. Also, the way her finger is in her mouth attracts male gaze as it looks sexual. The shot is mainly focusing on her arms and face which again attracts male gaze. She is represented as a young american woman from a high class.

Construction of Representations in the News

They tell the audience how many people were killed and therefore sets its importance in the news. It is bad news so has a higher news value than any good news. Also, because it is the United States and it is culturally similar to the United Kingdom, it could also be spoken widely about within the UK and will probably be shown in the news. If the news is fairly new and is aired before other similar news channels then it will get noticed faster and possibly have more viewers. It isn't odd anymore to hear of shootings etc in America. However, whenever one does happen it is still quite surprising around the  amount of people who are killed or shot innocently because of nothing. Stories like this involve the readers emotionally as they can imagine how it must feel for the families of the victims to lose somebody close to their heart.

Stereotypes in EastEnders

In Eastenders the character Karen Taylor follows a typical part in a British soap opera which is a single parent with children in a small household. Karen Taylor plays a very interesting character, because when she first entered Albert square many people expected her to be the type of person that steals and has no value or respect. However, she proved the other characters wrong in the soap as she does not steal from other people and fends for herself, what people thought about her wasn't true.

Kirkland Water

The main target audiences for Kirkland Water are people who enjoy the outdoors and nature, because they're exploring and will eventually become thirsty. They would want to have Kirkland water over other brands as it is natural spring water and is healthy for your body. It may also appeal to people who go to the gym etc as they want what's best for them. The colours blue and green have connotations of freshness, nature, coolness and purity. The use of the rare blue butterfly emphasises that is is better than the rest, it is unique and individual. It cannot be compared to other brands that sell the same product. In some parts of the world, butterflies are rare, so it is considered lucky to see one. In the same way, if you drink Kirkland Water you will feel more energised and superior to everyone else. I have used verbal and non-verbal communication to appeal to the audience with the use of the slogan 'pureness your body deserves' and with the use of blue butterflies with the waterfall in the background to reinforce it's freshness. The main message of my advert is to tell the consumers it keeps you hydrated and fresh, also that it is 100% natural and it is different from other types of water.

Print Adverts

This advert is a good example of a print advert as it shows its audience Heinz has the best ketchup made out of fresh red tomatoes, as it is made with hard work step-by-step to achieve its overall look and taste which its customers enjoy. The target audience for this advert would be people who enjoy fast food/chips and people of all ages. The sliced tomatoes grabs peoples attention, it makes people look twice at the advert as it is unique. The way in which the tomatoes are stacked on top of each other further show the audience how natural they are as they aren't perfectly aligned on top of each other- this would make it look artificial which isn't the message the publishers want to give. The connotations for the colour red are appetising, it also triggers appetite. The denotations could suggest when red found in natural foods such as tomatoes and strawberries, it indicates sweetness & ripeness. The text helps anchor the meaning of the image as it shows all of the ingredients in Heinz tomato ketchup are healthy and don't have added preservatives unlike other brands. The verb 'grow' has connotations of nature and health. Its publishers have said 'grow' rather than 'make' which shows the audience the organic aspects of the product.

This is an advert for an album cover. The font of 'My Everything' is written in a very feminine and girly style in dusty pink which makes it stand out from the rest of the cover as the only other colours on the cover are and white, grey and black, the way the text is written also links to the theme of the album itself as there are lots of songs that are emotional and which are relatable to the audience. It gives the fans an idea that the album will be about 'Everything' which is important to women, which stereotypically links to the way females talk about their feelings. The clothing she is wearing is very minimal including shorts, this draws the audience's attention to her torso and below. The darkness of the background highlights the main focus- the artist. The black and white colour scheme gives it a very sophisticated and classy look, many other album covers are colourful and bright which makes it stand out from the rest.

This advert looks really simple to the eye but when decoded provides many important messages to send the reader. The places where the woman, drink and writing are very straight and look organised and typically when women talk about going on a diet they want to feel organised in their activities and what they are consuming, it also reminds the audience of models who are tall and skinny which again reminds the audience to buy Diet Pepsi to look like models. The use of the colour blue in the background has connotations of being free and the seaside and it is typically used in weight loss advertisements. Blue represents freshness. The theme of the advertisement is Summery as there are a sunhat and straw, the lighting on the woman face could represent the sun and also the audience can mostly see the models arms which are skinny. It tells the reader that by drinking Diet Pepsi you'll feel more confident and look like the model shown. The use of the colour red makes it stand out and attracts many people. It also has connotations of passion and love, it could suggest the woman is passionate about drinking Pepsi. In my opinion, I think the advertisement is mainly addressing women as it is centred around the concept of 'skinny'  women.

Mythologies in Media

The colour blue connotes to freshness, cleanliness and breeze. The colour red used for the letter C could connote to the killing of bacteria. The blue sky with the sun in the background could show the audience that Crest toothpaste is god-like, it is the best of the best. Media Mythologies are commonly held beliefs, and they are used frequently to create meaning in advertising. When an image by itself is ambiguous - i.e. it has no clear meaning then meaning is often attached through the use of cartoon and logo. This is called ANCHORING.

The image of the Audi R8 in a metallic colour has mythologies of strength and masculinity. It is a very effective advertisement as it shows that all of the cars inside the Audi are not as great and strong as the Audi, it is almost god-like compared to the other cars. The formula one racing cars within the car could connote to its immense speed, the car is almost torn apart which may imply that theres nothing like it. The use of the colours yellow & red with the number '1' could show the audience that its like a formula one however it also looks appealing and masculine, it is better than the best.

The mythologies around the colour red are sexiness, powerful and sophistication. Roses are used as a symbol of love and have connotations of freshness, beauty & nature. These are the mythologies of flowers. The use of a woman in a suit could represent power & strength. Kendall Jenner is looking at the perfume which may imply that if you wear it, you will attract attention by the opposite gender (males) in a good way and make you feel confident and beautiful. The use of using the colour metallic gold as the lid has connotations of femininity and has mythologies of compassion, courage and confidence, which are seen as good traits which every woman wants to feel. It may highlight that if you wear this

perfume you'll instantly start to see a change in your
behaviour positively.
